This trade is a sequel to the trades involving Fox joining the Spurs and Lavine moving to the Kings, with Sissoko and Denver's second-round picks being part of this three-team deal. More importantly, trading Huerter to the Bulls allowed Sacramento to absorb Valanciunas' salary without worrying about luxury tax implications.
The Kings opted not to use their financial flexibility by taking on Tre Jones’ contract (sent to Chicago in the Fox trade), indicating they prioritize strengthening their frontcourt over finding a traditional point guard replacement for Fox. With players like Lavine, Monk, DeRozan, and rookie Devin Carter already providing ball-handling options, depth at center had been lacking off-the-bench.
The addition of Valanciunas—standing at 2.11 meters tall and weighing 120 kilograms—addresses that need effectively. Previously relying on Trey Lyles (who stands only at 2.06 meters) as Sabonis' backup was limiting since Lyles primarily plays power forward rather than center.
Apart from his low-post scoring ability or offensive rebounding skills commonly associated with him, Valanciunas excels in pick-and-roll situations as well; according to Second Spectrum tracking data from recent seasons shows he ranks among just six centers who executed more ball-screen actions than him—a list which includes Sabonis himself.
